The largest manufacturer of sheetfed printing presses in the world, Germany’s Heidelberg, continues to promote its “green” side with the introduction of the Saphira Eco line to its portfolio of consumable products—from printing plates and inks through to press washes and dampening solutions.
The company is following strict environmental criteria for the products in this portfolio and will be posting a catalogue online outlining what makes these consumables appropriate.
The products will carry the company’s own Saphira Eco Label, and all will follow three key principles:
Substitution: Wherever possible, mineral and synthetic components are replaced with renewable resources.
Reduction: The possible environmental impact of components in consumables that cannot yet be replaced is reduced.
Offsetting: Users of consumables can offset their CO2 footprint by purchasing emissions certificates.
“Using consumables has a not insignificant impact on a print shop’s environmental performance over a press’s entire lifespan,” notes Marcel Kiessling, member of the management board at Heidelberg responsible for Heidelberg Services in the company announcement, adding that these new products address environmental impact without sacrificing quality.
The products are to become available worldwide by the middle of 2011.
