Citing research by the Hartman Group indicating that more than 70 percent of shoppers consider sustainability when making a purchase, the Coca-Cola Co. is bringing its sustainability message to store aisles.

In the U.S. only, and being tested in select markets before a wider roll-out later this year, Coca-Cola is introducing a family of 100-percent recyclable display racks—the first batch constructed from corrugated cardboard. As part of the company’s new Give It Back program, it’s also asking retailers to return the shelves for recycling.

The obvious cardboard appearance of the initial stands is designed to communicate sustainability to shoppers, and the corrugate racks are to be followed in the “recyclable family” by racks made entirely of recycled PET plastic..

“These new racks are a great example of how we can find innovative ways to make our equipment both sustainable and part of the shopping experience,” said Bruce Karas, Director, Sustainability and Environment, Coca-Cola Refreshments in the announcement.

Coca-Cola has a 2020 goal to reach industry leadership in environmental stewardship in the areas of packaging and ancillary components like retail merchandise display racks.
